Honduras LIVE: El Tri win on penalties, advance to Nations League semis and qualify for 2024 Copa Am

Publish date: 2024-06-13

Mexico's Copa America hopes for 2024 hang in the balance on Tuesday night as El Tricolor host Honduras in the second leg of this CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal. Kickoff from Estadio Azteca is slated for 9:30 ET.

Honduras pulled off a shock in the first leg of this tie last week, winning 2-0 at Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa. It means Mexico will need a huge comeback to avoid a winner-take-all match that would determine its presence in next year's Copa America. The game will be broadcast on Paramount+ and TUDN in the United States.

Mexico vs. Honduras -- CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal second leg, live updates from Estadio Azteca in Mexico City:

Update narration

Mexico, the 12th-ranked national team in the world, were stunned Friday as a determined Honduras ran out deserving 2-0 winners in the quarterfinal first leg. Goals from Anthony Lozano and Bryan Rochez were enough for the 78th-ranked Catrachos to pull off the upset and put themselves in a great position to reach the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals -- which comes with an automatic berth to the 2024 Copa America in the United States.

But most worrying for Mexico boss Jaime Lozano is that his side didn't look much like scoring at all in the first leg. Mexico had only two shots on target on Friday despite managing 65 percent possession and running out a front three of Hirving Lozano, Orbelin Pineda, and Santiago Gimenez. Manager Lozano will have to get the 11 right, or the pressure on him will rise another couple notches.

Honduras boss Reinaldo Rueda, meanwhile, will be looking for more of the same in what is sure to be a pressure-cooker atmosphere at Estadio Azteca. Honduras will rely on star winger Luis Palma for creativity on the counterattack, while Anthony Lozano will have to be careful to avoid picking up another yellow card -- a suspension looms for the forward if he does get booked.

Rueda's midfield duo of Jorge Alvarez and Deybi Flores will be looking to gum up the middle of the pitch again, just as the pair did at a high level in the first leg. If Honduras wins on aggregate, the country will secure only its second Copa America berth -- the national team's previous appearance came in 2001, as invited guests replacing tournament mainstays Argentina.
