A Justified spinoff with Timothy Olyphant is coming: awesome or too late?

Justified ran on FX from 2010 to 2015. Like a lot of show I’ve watched, I remember the characters more than the plots. Of course Timothy Olyphant was the standout as US Marshal and star Raylan Givens. That man was sex in a cowboy hat, and I went on to watch the hell out of him in Deadwood, which I missed when it first aired. That was also my introduction to Walton Goggins, who played Rayland’s nemesis Boyd Crowder. There were so many other phenomenal actors on that show including Margo Martindale, Sam Elliot and Neal McDonough. The good news is that Justified is coming back! Vulture reports that a limited series is coming that will follow Givens’ career as he moves to Miami and Detroit. It’s called Justified: City Primeval and will have the original show’s producers and showrunner.

Timothy Olyphant… is set to reprise his role as Raylan Givens, that smoldering gunslinger, in a miniseries spinoff of FX’s crime drama Justified, which ended in 2015. Justified: City Primeval reunites Olyphant with producers of the original acclaimed series, including creator Graham Yost. The new limited series is set to be based off Elmore Leonard’s novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, after the original series drew from Leonard’s novella Fire in the Hole and other stories featuring the character of Givens. City Primeval takes place after Givens’s work in Kentucky is finished, with the U.S. Marshal living in Miami, before he ends up in Detroit and involved with the case of someone known as the Oklahoma Wildman.

It’s unknown if other castmembers will return, but of course everyone wants Boyd to come back! I’m watching season one of The Righteous Gemstones on HBO now. I’m at episode five and don’t recommend it exactly because it’s a little maddening, but Walton Goggins is excellent as an evangelical preacher, as is John Goodman.

Justified wasn’t one of my favorites as it seemed to lose the thread a few seasons in. I feel the same way about this spinoff as I did about the Deadwood movie. I’ll watch it to see what the characters are doing and to be transported back to this world. Maybe I’ll read some Elmore Leonard stories in the meantime.
